7469 posts · Joined 2007. #1 · May 9, 2017. I just picked up a 377" sbc short block for my 57. It's a 4.000 x 3.75 stroke deal. Motown block, forged Ohio crankshaft, 6" Manley rods, forged Ross pistons. 10.75 compression with 64cc heads. It will still be a 90% street car. Want to make sure it still makes good torque at lower rpm.For the first 25 or 30 years, stock small-block Chevy heads used simple, 3/8-inch pressed-in studs that did an adequate job of offering a rigid pivot point for the rocker arm. That 400 with a dishtop piston is usually around 10 to 1 or 10.5 to 1 compression with 64 cc heads. That is figuring a 12.5 cc dish which is what most of them had. That is borderline with pump gas. Use 93 octane and some octane boost to be safe.

They were 462624's and a local junkyard that rebuilds heads has a set of rebuilt 333882's for $275. They are both 76cc heads with .194 valves. Are there any other differences that matter? Making a small research about new set of heads for a 350 chevy, I ran into an article from 2009 saying good words about Canfield heads and I kind of start to like them. I also read more recently that the owners of Canfield retired and the business was sold.THose heads (882) are not very thick or strong castings and typically crack between the valves. I agree with Bill if they need any work or $$$ to make them work I would buy a different set of heads. ...
